Uwa Uzebu

Digital Financial Services Practitioner and Scholar

Uwa is an experienced business leader, passionate about making the world a little better for the next generation. Focusing on Financial Services, he has spent the last 15 years working with stakeholders across Banking, Payment and Lending to design, develop and commercialize technology powered solutions that now serve more than 100 million consumers and merchants in 47 countries on 4 continents.

He is currently Executive Director, Consumer Lending at one of the "Big Four" banks in the U.S. where he leads Partner Enbalement for the Embedded Finance business. Prior to this, he spent a decade at Mastercard in Lagos, Dubai and New York serving most recently as Global Vice President, Product Management. In this role he oversaw a multi-country team of product specialists, managers and directors with Life Cycle Management accountability for a portfolio of digital payment solutions globally.

Prior to Mastercard, Uwa played a key role in setting up and commercializing the Mobile Money and Agency Banking service of a leading publicly quoted, Pan African Financial Technology company. He also worked as a management consultant, advising financial sector regulators and operators on financial inclusion policy and strategy.

Uwa holds a Master of Business Administration degree with distinction from the University of Wales, and a Doctor of Business Administration degree, from the University of Liverpool. He completed his post-doctorate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Outside work, Uwa serves as Adjunct Professor of Business & Management at Manhattanville University, New York.

She is currently the Head of Regulatory Engagements, British American Tobacco (BAT), where she actively monitors legal, environmental, and regulatory landscapes, formulates strategy, and engages as a subject matter expert in stakeholder interactions, and aligns to global, regional, and local policies to the business objective. She was instrumental in delivering key wins on Fiscal stability, moderations and tax reversals in Nigeria and Niger Republic and legal enforcement against illicit trade in Ghana and Niger Republic.

As Senior Regulatory Affairs Manager and the Group Tax Manager in Heineken Nigeria, her key achievements include being a key resource in the successful merger of Nigerian Breweries Plc and Consolidated Breweries Plc, tax holiday approval from the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission with significant business savings amongst many others.

Prior to her work experience at Heineken Nigeria, she worked at KPMG Nigeria as a Senior Experienced Consultant, providing exceptional Tax, Regulatory and Company Secretarial Services to both local and international clients in the Consumer Goods and Manufacturing sectors.

She completed her law degree from the University of Ilorin Nigeria as the best graduating student in 2003. She was called to the Nigerian bar in 2004 and went on to obtain a Masters' degree in law from the University of Pretoria, South Africa in 2007. She is currently undergoing an Executive MBA with the prestigious Lagos Business School Nigeria.
